Maya Tutorials: Texturing Pirate Cove Part2

Nothing better than finishing the second part of Pirates Cove tutorial to warm up, for texturing my scene. I found it pretty straight forward tutorial, as soon as I got hold of the tools to apply the bump maps and spec maps, I was most of the time in front of the tutorial.

Also, finally I got hold of Maya 2009 to Mac, so I wont have any problem with versions anymore. :)

Here the texture map:

Unit 3- Scene Objects Research- Part II

After a few days of euphoric busyness is time to get back to work, and to stop eating those amazing Christmas delicacies. Here's the second part of the post, with all the researching into the objects I will be using in my scene. As the image show, I want to create the a realistic scene, as I am using real-life references and not digitally generated ones or other concept arts.

Chest of Drawers:

In the picture above shows a room in an abandoned hospital, but I put this picture to focus on the chest of drawers. A piece of furniture that I'll be using on the 3rd room, I understand that this chest of drawers is quite small and looks more like a file cabinet, idea that I am also thinking of add instead of the chest of drawers.

Interior Details:

Doors:

Doors is a element that will be featuring at least one of the rooms in the hallway, Victorian style doors are quite common in houses all around Britain so to find reference pictures of them is not difficult, though its size is important to create a realistic environment.

Skirting Boards:

To decorate the hallway I will use small interior details once again to give the realistic 'look' to the scene. Also the addition of a layer to create a old and abandoned hospital will accentuate the eerie feeling.

Other Details:

Hospital Tables:

This object will be placed in the right side of the hallway and just part of it will be see, as many other objects on the scene, cropping them will create ambiguity.

Lamps ( not giving the scene lighting):

Wall Lamps:

Victorian Hospitals were decorated with a several amount of wall lamps that alongside with the main lamps in the ceiling produced light to the hospital hallways and helping the dark lonely nights lived by the nurses, easier.

Bearing the style in mind, I started to look profoundly into more designs, even more recent ones that still have the base of the Victorian style.

Ceiling Lamps:

Straitjackets:

This piece of clothing was one of the most revolutionary invented to use in the mental hospitals, until then the more dangerous patients had to wear chains that sometimes could hurt them.
With this piece of clothing they were able to walk around without harming somebody else or even themselves.

Series: Kingdom Hospital, 2004, Stephen King

After I finished watching the whole mini-series consisted in 13 episodes, which I absolutely adored, I can write a bit more about it.

Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital is the haunting drama series by the award-winning, best-selling master of horror. Based on Lars Von Trier's Danish miniseries 'Rigit'. King tells the terrifying story of The Kingdom, a hospital which is haunted by spirits of children that once were killed in a fire at that same site. the supernatural happens when a little girl, Mary, appears crying through the hallways, seeking for someone to help her, and to open the door to the land of the dead, to free this long lost souls.

Each episode, tells a story of a patient that is admitted to the hospital and shows how each of their cases complete the whole series, from helping Mary, to even harm her. As soon you started to watch you are devoured into watching the whole series at once, the only problem is that sometimes the language or even the way is depicted can confuse the viewer. King's being a master of horror, he writes this whole series in a horror novel style having a narrator taking the spectator through what happens in that hospital. Also to 'cut' all this supernatural feeling to the whole series , King's adds some funny parts into it, specially related to 'the Keepers', a secret association inside the same hospital that is eager to destroy the neurologist Dr. Stegman career.
In my opinion, it is beautifully shot and each story got a moral behind it. the distiction of a newly-built hospital and the ' Old Kingdom'.

As a whole is worth watching especially if you are into supernatural and horror matters. but I advise now that some parts can be quite strong, confusing and even hard to follow.

d'Artiste: Digital Artists Master Class- Concept Art

This was in my opinion, the most valuable present I have received this christmas, from my girlfriend ( no it wasnt Santa). After seeing this book once in one of our amazing Photoshop Classes back in unit 2. It was a book that always was on my buying list, and because it is X-mas, my Girlfriend surprised me with it.

The book got amazing concept art pictures, from 4 different well-known Concept Artists: George Hull, Viktor Antonov, Andrew Jones and Nicolas "Sparth" Bouvier. it takes us through from most of their beautiful work in a wide gallery and present step -by step of some concept artworks so the reader as an idea of the techniques used and how they overcome their problems.
This book is a 'bible' of concept art, if want to succeed in this industry not only helps beginners but also more advanced artists. So in my opinion is a must buy if you really want to go forth in the concept design industry.

Next on the list is d'Artiste: Matte Painting

Unit 3- Scene Objects Research- Part I

My scene will have a certain number of objects so I wanted to give them the Victorian style by researching some objects of that time.
According to the list I have done before the objects will be placed within the 3 rooms and the hallway, and will create ambiguity on the whole scene.

Mainly for the rooms, I wanted to give this appearance shown on the picture above, a simple and old-fashioned room, also with a 'cold' look.

Chairs:

Here's some research I did on Victorian Style Chairs, for my scene I may combine small things from each one and create ,what I would say, a 'hybrid' of a chair.

Mirrors:

Rectangular:

Oval:

Mirrors are another object in my scene that will have an important role on the overall scene, as they 'reflect' stories or happenings.

Hospital Beds:

Dolls:

Although I am planning to add some doll's heads and dismembered doll bodies, I dont want to create an hyper-realistic doll or anything human-like as I dont want to get the complicated world of organic CG, instead I have researched a simpler and easier old-fashioned doll, the example I used is the one in 'Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital', who knows this mini-series, it was Mary's Doll, A old-fashioned doll made out of paper-mache.

Also, I researched some other dolls that looked really creepy, specially the old ones.

The third picture, shows the creepiest doll I have ever seen, that kind of maniac smile really gives a shiver down my spine. :S

Pierrot, the Sad Clown:

Also, as I posted before I had the idea to add the picture of a Clown on the second room, giving an extra hint of eeriness, so I went back to my childhood and the only famous clown I knew was Pierrot, because my mum had a porcelain figure of it, so I thought it was appropriate for the scene, nothing better in a creepy scene a sad clown.
